It was my first proper drive in Colorado, mike looked like this. We stopped off 10miles outside of Glenwood Springs at Hanging Lake. This was classed as a 1 mile DIFFICULT hike, “take plenty of water”, “sturdy shoes only”, “no dogs”. It was a very steep 1,000ft climb and took us about an hour. After such a steep climb (the last part was a scramble up some rocks), the view of hanging lake was stunning, we were exhausted. Just as we got back to the car it started raining, perfect timing.
Next stop Breckenridge, 9,600 ft above sea level, it was cold, 6C. Now we have seen the whole spectrum of weather. Brekenridge is a ski resort, where Glenwood Spring was lower, and it was off season here. There was still snow on the mountains and the town was pretty quiet. By June once the snow has melted the gondolas would open up for mountain biking.
We hadn’t realised when we booked that our hotel was actually a lodge and we had booked a studio, including a kitchen area, which turned out to be brilliant as we were only here one day and the place was fairly shut.
Headed straight out to the local organic supermarket Grocery Store, where we stocked up on breakfast, dinner and wine supplies.
Very nice. Good food and good accommodation.
